Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Advocacy

When Dr. Yomtoob lost his mother to suicide over thirty years ago, there was little, if nothing, available to help him with his grief. Years later, after completing his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, he became one of the founding members of the Illinois Chapter of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), which has grown to become one of the premier chapters in the national organization.

In his dynamic and active role as AFSP-IL Chapter President, Dr. Yomtoob has initiated several impactful measures including expanding our social media footprint, supporting National programs that build stronger chapters and legislative advocacy. He also meets with State and Federal Leadership to encourage support for suicide prevention and mental health legislation.  Nationally, Dr. Yomtoob initiated the National LGBTQ+ Taskforce, which has resulted in sweeping changes across the organization.

Dr. Yomtoob conducted a Chicago based support group for LGBTQ+ survivor of suicide loss. He is also one of the original trainers of Suicide Bereavement Support Group Facilitators Training (SBSGFT), where he co-leads a multi-day seminar (2 days in person, 3 virtually) to teach people to run grief groups in their own communities. He is passionate about an examination of culture and grief and incorporates them in these trainings.
